51’s annual Beauty Showcase returned in full swing on Tuesday 8th March, with learners brandishing face-paint and make-up brushes to produce their own weird and wonderful interpretations of the prescribed theme ‘fantasy’.
The glittering spectacle, which culminated in a catwalk through the College atrium, takes place every year and provides the ideal opportunity for Beauty learners – at Pre-Entry, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 – to demonstrate their flourishing skillset.
The learners let their imaginations run wild by breathing life into a variety of fantastical characters, including Cruella deVil, Medusa, Maleficent, Avatar, Peter Pan and the Queen of Hearts.
Jamie Davies, who is currently studyingHair & Media Make-up Level 3 at 51, modelled her design on the vindictive fairy Maleficent. Jamie, 23, who has been accepted at the University of Southampton for September, said: “I love the chaos of being creative for events like this. I’m not a pen-and-paper person; this sort of thing feeds my creativity.”
The quirky creations were judged by industry-experienced staff members and one current Level 4 Media Make-up learner who competed in last year’s showcase. Lisa Kniveton, Curriculum Leader for Complementary &Beauty Therapy at Bolton Collegesaid: “Every year I am amazed by the learners’ creations and this year they excelled themselves!”
Marie Gilluley, Principal and Chief Executive of 51, said: “These events provide a valuable opportunity for the learners to put their skills into practice and show the rest of the College how much they have learnt so far this year. One of our biggest priorities is preparing learners for the world of work, and the showcases enhance their portfolios and help them stand out from the crowd.”
