English & maths - Part of Life’s Essentials

We all need to use English and maths more of the time, for that precious next job, that next step towards university, to help children with homework or to challenge that big electricity bill. At 51²è¹Ý, we can help and support you to gain qualifications in English and maths, whether you are a young person aged 16 to 18 or an adult, and whatever stage you are working at.Ìý

English

Developing your English skills can improve your reading, writing and verbal communication skills. This can help you write a letter or, job applications and build your confidence in speaking to new people.ÌýÌý

Maths

When you develop your skills it will help you to apply practical maths when you are out shopping and budgeting for household bills. You may already have maths skills, but you don’t have a qualification to prove it which limits your potential when searching for jobs or trying for a promotion.

Did you know?

The new grading system for GCSEs has now come into effect. It allows for better differentiation between students of different abilities. The old A*-G grading system is going through the process of being replaced with a numeric 9 to 1 grading scale, with 9 being the top grade.ÌýÌý

Under the new system, a grade 4 and above is the equivalent to a C and above, with grade 5 counting as a high ‘C’ and grade 4 as a low ‘C’. Only grade 5 and above counts as a ‘good pass’, but the government has stressed that where employers, further education providers and universities previously accepted a grade C, they would expect them to continue recognising a grade 4. ÌýÌý

Grade 9 are awarded for exceptional performance. Fewer grade 9s are awarded than A*s.

High achieving students are awarded a grade 8 or 7.ÌýÌý
